Lower House sits in its own romantic and self-contained 7-acre valley, made up of wood and copse, little fields, orchard, stream & wildlife pond. As you cross the Dulas Brook, via our small stone bridge to come up our tree-lined drive, you pass from England into Wales. We are in the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Offa's Dyke Path passes through the field behind the house. From your bedroom windows you can hear the sound of the small stream which runs past the front of the house.
We have been working on the house and garden for the 25 years that we have lived here. The rambling house is largely 18th century with older parts. The exceptional garden has been featured in many magazines, including Gardens Illustrated (Sep 2007) and Country Life (Nov 08). The house has also featured in magazines, including Period Living (May 2007). See Press Page. There is much of interest in the garden for guests to enjoy and be inspired by, in every season: Strong layout with luxuriant planting and interesting foliage combinations, quirky topiary, formal & wildlife pools & traditional vegetable & cut flower garden. We also welcome visits from people who would like to see our garden between April and September. Please phone first. "We went from stressed to relaxed in record time! Helped hugely by the endless fires...the amazingly comfortable bed & delicious breakfasts. We are loath to leave" M & S Middlesex March 2011 "A fantastic 3 nights [& not just because of the beautiful weather] - a beautiful house, wonderful food & the ideal hosts!" N, P & C Glasgow April 2011 "The best bed ever - loved the veggie breakfast & 5 star hospitality & garden - heaven in Hay." S & M Cambridge June 2011 "Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us! Definitely the coolest place we've stayed in on our trip." C & J.F Los Angeles June 2011 "Our third visit to Lower House, which says it all. Nicky & Pete are wonderful hosts, the Rose Room is a joy & the gardens are an inspiration." J & R.W Brisbane, Australia August 2011 "Plas Bach: Like living in the midst of a Fairy Tale! From relaxing in the morning sun, cosy in the waffle dressing gowns & admiring the stunning Box Garden, to wandering round Hay & then returning in the late afternoon to enjoy a drink on the peaceful veranda, & then finally falling into a bed more comfortable than our own! What more could you ask for?" K & C.W London July 2011 |
